Finding the right wedding venue can be a tricky task. We’ve got 10 fab questions you should be asking when you choose the venue for your big day!

Are you licensed for civil ceremonies?

Essential if you’re planning a one-stop wedding. Ask to see the ceremony room, and for contact details of the local registrar so you can give notice.

What does your package include?

Wedding packages vary hugely, from room-only hire to fully inclusive deals, so request a detailed breakdown. As cliché as it sounds, always read the small print!

Can we provide our own catering/drinks/flowers?

‘Dry’ venues, where you can choose your own suppliers, often represent better value than those that expect you to use their inhouse suppliers. Always check if they charge a corkage fee, too.

Will there be other weddings taking place on the same day?

If so, will the two events be kept entirely separate, eg, with use of different toilets? You’ll want to feel like the only bride even if there is another, so check what separations are in place.

How many people do you cater for?

Check the venue’s minimum and maximum numbers to ensure they can accommodate your party.

How do we pay?

Many venues will have a payment plan where you pay in installments, with the final payment due a month before the big day.

What about a tasting?

Ask if you can try the set wedding menu to check the quality. Also, ask if they can be flexible, perhaps providing two types of desserts or starters for male and female guests.

Are we allowed candles/confetti/fireworks/a live band?

Old or listed venues or those in residential areas may have restrictions in place on décor and evening entertainment.

Do you have an in-house wedding co-ordinator?

A dedicated planner will take the stress out of planning and help keep things on track on the day.

Is there any accommodation included?

Ask whether your venue hire price includes use of the bedrooms. If not, can they offer a preferential rate for overnight guests?
