Nestled deep within the rolling Hertfordshire hills, The Mews at Sopwell House offer understated luxury in a prime countryside setting. Set within Sopwell House Hotel’s 12-acre grounds, a stunning 18th-century Georgian manor house, the glamorous country retreats are perfect for those seeking privacy coupled with the benefits of the hotel’s elegant restaurants and spa.

Originally an old stable block, the newly refurbished 16 Mews Suites are flanked by a stunning botanical garden designed by Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medallist, Ann-Marie Powell. An infinity-edged hydrotherapy pool with ceramic detailing sparkles in the centre of the bespoke garden, offering barefoot luxury year-round. Accessible only via private gates and surrounded by two-metre pleached hornbeam, The Mews offers guests exclusivity. The suites also benefit from their own private courtyards with sunken spa baths and dark wicker seating areas.

With the choice of studio, one-bedroom or duplex mews houses, each of the properties is styled in a quintessentially British manner, with their own living space. Six of The Mews also have kitchenettes, enabling a truly self-sufficient stay.

Adorable country home features, including timber wood flooring, farmhouse doors, exquisite wall coverings and cosy window seats, are set against elegant slate and leather furnishings. For colder months, most of The Mews offer neatly stacked logs alongside sleek gas replaces.

Being private and self-contained, they are perfect for a romantic getaway, especially the four-poster bed suites, with double- ended in-room baths and the all-important Champagne bottle rest. While it would be easy to stay hidden away, the hotel’s offerings will tempt you out. Stroll through the gardens or drift away in the spa, complete with a large pool, steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi.

Fine dining and classic dishes are available in the hotel’s two restaurants, after which you can savour a tipple (or two!) in the elegant cocktail lounge, or watch the sun set from the glass-fronted conservatory bar.

For those looking to say “I do”, Sopwell House is the perfect location for civil or religious ceremonies, being licensed to hold civil marriage ceremonies for up to 300 guests. You can say your vows in one of the elegant function suites or outside in the magnificent gardens. Whether you prefer something more grand and formal or intimate and relaxed, dedicated wedding co-ordinators are on hand to ensure that your dream day becomes an effortless reality.
