What is your funniest memory of your time dating?
We were on holiday in Santorini and traditional dancers were entertaining us at a restaurant. They beckoned everyone to the front to join in the smashing plate dance. Glen was so excited he scraped the food from his plate. All I heard next was an almighty smash. He had by passed the delicate plates for smashing and used his dinner plate instead!
How did the proposal happen?
The night before we flew to New York, Glen had cooked us steak for dinner and was very quiet during the meal. He gave me a Tiffany ring and asked me to marry him – I was so shocked I said I would have to think about it! He asked me three more times, but it wasn’t until a week later when I finally said yes.
I found my dress in Temperley London. When I saw my blue dress I knew it was the one. It was different, unexpected and not necessarily bridal – exactly what I wanted! The dress was floor-length with a deep V-back and an overlay that owed beautifully in the wind. I added cuff sleeves to personalise it.
I love shoes so I knew exactly what I wanted! I chose a pair of silver strappy Louboutins. My mum gave me a silver sixpence for luck that stayed inside my shoe for the entire day. My jewelled hair slide and garter came from Etsy and I teamed them with Swarovski earrings.
We found Glen’s suit together in Reiss. Glen had it altered to be a more tapered skinny fit so it would go well with his boat shoes. It was a light grey suit with pale blue check. We knew it was going to be hot so he just wore a short sleeve shirt, bow tie, waistcoat and trousers.
Nikkala’s Vince dress came from Liberty’s, but as the dress was white we couldn’t tell anyone in case they guessed I wouldn’t be in white myself. Having a dress she loved and felt comfortable in made her look even more glamorous.
What was the best part of the Ceremony
We hadn’t seen the ceremony venue before so it was a lot to take in as we walked down the aisle. In keeping with Greek tradition, a family of Greek musicians played us down the aisle. Glen also surprised me by having them turn up at my hotel room that morning to serenade me!
We wanted it to be white and glamorous. The scenery was stunning so we were conscious not to overdo the decorations. We used glass and silver decorations to bring out the beads and crystals in my dress.
We chose David Austin Roses, white avalanche roses with silver brunia berries and trailing greenery for a soft look that still popped against the blue of my dress, all tied together with a silver silk ribbon for my bouquet. The groom and father of the bride had white rose buttonholes with silver brunia berries and dusty miller leaves. We also had hanging balls of roses with glass crystals.
Our save the date cards were purchased from Knots & Kisses in the shape of luggage tags advising people to save the dates and book their flights. We had a wedding website instead of invitations. It was great because we could put all the hotel details, flights and information in one place.
We had traditional Greek dancers and musicians at the reception, complete with a smashing plate dance for Glen. We also had a huge surprise rework display on the beach and released sky re lanterns. Our first dance was to ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran because the lyrics felt so apt.
It was useful to know our priorities. We knew we wanted an open bar for the entire day but we were not that bothered about having a videographer, so this was the first part to be cut. Wedding Ideas definitely helped me plan! It was the magazine that gave me the idea to learn our first dance, add DIY details and to make sure we spent time together as a couple on the day.
After the wedding in Santorini, we island hopped to Mykonos and stayed in the beautiful Rocabella hotel. We were absolutely exhausted after the run up and planning for the wedding, so we enjoyed a lazy honeymoon by the pool. For our first anniversary of tying the knot we have booked to go to Las Vegas and Los Angeles!
