Christmas was always going to be wonderful for Gemma and Wesley, sharing it with their six-month old daughter for the first time. “On Christmas morning Wes proposed! It was such a special time and made the holiday even more magical.”
The experience of finding her dress, on the other hand, was more challenging.
“I knew exactly what I wanted for my wedding dress but I couldn’t find it anywhere!”
“The day I found my dress I’d tried on 35 dresses already, when I decided on impulse to return to Jessica Ley Brides, which I’d visited the day before. I was absolutely shattered (as were my bridal party!) when Lyn at the boutique brought out one more dress… this was the one! It was perfect and I felt so emotional. I loved the low back and fitted fishtail, and the antique lace reminded me of my nan.”
The bride opted for a white gown with a low back and scalloped lace edge. “I purchased a belt separately and had it sewn onto my dress.” A tulle, mid-length veil and Monsoon shoes with lace appliqué completed Gemma’s look. “I definitely recommend hiring a makeup artist and hairdresser for the finishing touches. It makes the morning of your wedding relaxing – you can enjoy everything that’s happening around you and be pampered before arriving at the church.”
“We wanted a relaxed country wedding style for the groom, so a formal suit wasn’t right for us.”
Instead, Wesley chose a waistcoat and brogues from Moss Bros, teaming them with a Next shirt and a smart pair of chinos. “I felt so excited that I was about to become his wife when I saw him on the day,” Gemma gushes.
Two adult bridesmaids alongside the couple’s two daughters formed the bridal party. “The bridesmaid dresses came from Little Mistress and were pale yellow maxi dresses with jewelled waist detailing. I run Sewing At The Button Box, so I made the flower girl dresses myself, using white broderie anglaise fabric with a net underlay and pale yellow waistband.”
Gemma and Wesley exchanged vows in a religious ceremony at Claines Church in Worcester. Readings included ‘I Cannot Promise’ by Mark Twain and Colossians 3. 12-17, with two hymns also featuring in the service. A highlight for the groom was seeing his bride walk down the aisle towards him – “Gem looked stunning,” Wes smiles.
“My mum walked me down the aisle – we have such a strong bond, it felt 100% right.”
The couple celebrated their reception at The Fleece Inn, near Evesham. “We enjoyed a luxury buffet outside the barn, with banoffee pie for dessert. The food was incredible! Later in the evening, we also had fish or halloumi and chips.”
“We wanted to have a relaxed, rustic family wedding.”
The bride handmade her own stationery for the day, using a sewing machine to create a design that she then scanned to create a digital version to print and send.
“I also made lace and hessian table runners, bunting to hang from the beams and peg place names. In addition, we also commissioned a 4ft willow heart with our names, wedding date and two lovebirds on it to decorate the top table. Lanterns hung on shepherd’s hooks led the way into the garden, which was filled with twinkly lights and watering cans of flowers.” Apple tree log slices, milk churns and jam jars filled with flowers added pretty finishing touches.
Passion Flowers Worcester created the floral arrangements, ranging from the milk churn centrepieces to the bouquets and buttonholes.
“Our friend kindly made us our three-tier naked cake, filled with vanilla and lemon buttercream. We decorated it with natural flowers on the day and displayed the cake on a chunk of wood to enhance the rustic feel.”
Local DJ Ed Steelfox took to the decks. “We’d spoken about the style of music we wanted beforehand, he was brilliant and all of our guests commented on how great the music was.”
“We chose ‘Glorious Day’ by Embrace for our first dance song.”
After the wedding, the couple and their children jetted off for a familymoon in Ibiza!
