Where did you stay?

Kilworth, in South Leicestershire. It’s a sprawling estate, with a gravelly drive to rival Downton’s! Both The Orangery and The Wordsworth Restaurants offer seasonal and locally sourced produce and make for magical dining with domed ceilings, sparkling chandeliers, open fires and paintings. Both cry out for a stylish wedding, in fact. The three public rooms are an informal setting for Champagne afternoon teas, gatherings with family or after dinner apertifs, and where you’ll follow in the footsteps of Tony Lommi, The Black Sabbath guitarist who lived here in the 1960s.

What’s special about it?

The sumptuous bedrooms, the history-hung hallways, a view overlooking the rolling hills and a beautiful lake – the estate provides maps for walking routes so be sure to pack your Hunters for a stroll in the fresh air after your hearty breakfast. Every bedroom tells its own story: they’re named after authors after all. If you’re harbouring dreams of an author’s life, this would be the perfect place to start.

We stayed in the Shelley, which was a countrified heaven of calm walls and florals, and a pretty writing desk with complimentary whiskey and port (well, those creative juices sometimes need a kickstart, don’t they?). There are two four-poster rooms and garden suites, which offer views of the landscaped knot garden with water features. We especially loved the Clarins beauty hauls stuffed into bathrooms.
