Located on the blue flag-honoured coast of Pissouri Bay, between Paphos and Limassol, and reached by a winding mountain road with incredible views, Columbia Beach Resort offers a truly authentic taste of Cypriot charm. But there’s more to this Mediterranean rock than sun and sand.
According to legend, Cyprus is the birthplace of Aphrodite – the ancient goddess of love – making it the perfect honeymoon destination for newlyweds. Journalist Natalia Rich and her new husband sped off to Columbia Beach in Cyprus after their wedding. Here’s what she had to say about the resort.
Honeymoon Review: Columbia Beach Resort in Cyprus
Intimate, quaint, authentic, pastoral, and personal: the complex inhabits its own private section of beach, promising a sun-drenched refuge from the demands of everyday life. And continuing the resort’s traditional Cypriot rustic-cum-contemporary theme, accommodation is a cosy home-away-from-home yet luxurious at the same time.
Just taking in the stunning views over the Mediterranean from the 80-metre long lagoon pool – with the occasional visit to the poolside bar – is enough to keep even the most demanding couple occupied.
The Food & Drink
The food and drink is what you would expect of any five-star resort. All menus are lovingly created by Executive Chef, Ioannis Giakoumidis, who works tirelessly to ensure that all the culinary creations are always fresh, and that guests’ appetites are always satisfied.
There are four main restaurants on the resort; the first, named for the white cliffs that embrace Pissouri Bay, Cape Aspro offers the ultimate in al fresco dining. Introducing a brand-new sharing concept, this specialty seafood restaurant offers a menu dedicated to offering guests seafood-centric sharing platters. Providing guests with a mouth-watering journey of Mediterranean-inspired delights, Cape Aspro uses the very best of the region’s seafood.
We ate there on the first night of our holiday and tried out the new ‘street eats menu’ for 2019. The chefs cooked a selection of tapas-style food on a huge hot stove in front of us, as we dined out under the stars. This was our favourite restaurant by far as the chefs explained all that we were eating and showed us the ingredients they used. The food was delicious, and the candle lit setting with tables focused around a central fire-pit BBQ was really romantic.
Another stand-out place to eat on the resort is the Apollo Tavern overlooking the Resort’s lush green lawns, the azure sea and rolling hills. Open for both lunch and dinner, its specialty is in providing a traditional Cypriot dining experience courtesy of its menu, which is heavily influenced by cuisine typical to the Eastern Mediterranean.
Grecian design and award-winning facilities are offered at Hébe Spa. Featuring six treatment rooms, relaxation areas, a Jacuzzi, and an incredible indoor pool, their luxury spa is the perfect place for some down-time. There’s a range of signature treatments on offer but the 70-minute Hebe Ritual is a favourite among newlyweds.
On our last day we had our first ever massage at the spa, the Hebe Spa Ritual, which was really relaxing. The staff made us feel so comfortable and it ended our holiday on a massive high. We would definitely recommend a spa treatment to anyone visiting the resort and wish we had more than one on our trip as it was that good.
Helping the community
The resort operates the Columbia Cat Care Project which rescues and looks after stray cats within the area of Pissouri. They treat and neuter any stray cats and allow them onto the property to be cared for daily.
The hotel rescued 40 cats which were all really friendly and came outside our room every morning to say hello. There was also a cat naming set up where you could choose to name one of the cats which seemed to be popular with the children staying in the resort. One particular cat came to our room every morning and we let her in to say hello which was really funny. We named her Lulabelle!
A seven-night honeymoon stay at Columbia Beach Resort starts from just £1,005 per person. This price is based on two adults sharing a Junior Suite, Garden View, on a bed and breakfast basis, departing on 12 May 2020. It also includes direct, return flights from London Gatwick and private resort transfers.
