Where are you taking your first trip as husband and wife? If you need honeymoon inspiration, Charlotte and Neil’s romantic trip to Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam will give you all the ideas you need…

Where did you go, and why?

We started our honeymoon in Singapore, then spent time in Hoi An, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. We flew to Kuala Lumpur for a two-night stay, then finished off with eight days on the island of Langkawi in Malaysia.

We both love travelling and exploring new countries and cultures. We have amazing memories of our first trip to Thailand together, which we went on a year into our relationship. After having such a fantastic time there, we knew we wanted to explore South East Asia further. We love the food, the culture, the way of life, the contrast to being at home.

What did you do there?

We hit the city sights in Singapore — visiting Chinatown, drinking cocktails at Ku De Ta at the top of Marina Bay Sands, taking a trip on the Singapore flyer, and exploring.

In Vietnam we spent time in three very different places. Ho Chi Minh was just crazy — busy, frantic, noisy… We had a lot of fun taking trips round the different markets and seeing what enterprising locals had to offer. We spent time visiting a number of museums that paid homage to the efforts of the Vietnamese people in the Vietnam War. It was sobering to see the effect that it had (and still has) on Vietnam.

Hanoi was just as big, busy and noisy — if not busier and noisier! Here we spent time exploring the city. We also took a trip out to Halong Bay, which was absolutely magical and one of the best places that we spent time in Vietnam. It was stunningly beautiful and so remote, we felt so far away from everything. It was almost as if the real world didn’t exist for a few days.

Hoi An was a complete change of pace from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh, with a fantastic beach and beautiful town. We enjoyed spending time by the river at night with all the lanterns lit up. Charlotte had four stunning dresses made and wished that she’d been able to fit more in her case!

In Malaysia, we started in Kuala Lumpur for a couple of days. Visiting the Petronas Towers is a must as is a meal down Jalan Alor, the night market in the city centre. We also visited the Bird Park, which was a pleasant change of pace from the rest of the city!

Finally, we spent a week on Langkawi — a place to chill out following the travels of the previous couple of weeks. We stayed at Berjaya Resort, which was beautiful and peaceful with an amazing beach. We also took time to do a four-hour jet ski tour which was one of the highlights of the holiday — hopping between several islands and remote beaches. Langkawi was almost a rainforest island and we did a kayaking trip to get into the heart of it.

What was your most romantic moment?

It’s difficult to choose between being together on the junk boat in Halong Bay or the bungalow over looking the sea at Berjaya. They were the most peaceful parts of the trip, feeling as though it was just the two of us.

It’s great for honeymoons because…

It is exciting to discover somewhere so different from home together. Our honeymoon had everything — excitement of exploring, bustling cities, great food, loads of activities, fantastic hotels, remote beaches, beautiful bays and lovely, friendly people. As we were so far from everything, it was easy to relax and forget real life existed!

Why did you use Buy Our Honeymoon?

We thought that using Buy Our Honeymoon would be a great way to raise money for our honeymoon, whilst allowing people to buy us an actual gift as opposed to just giving us money. We thought it made it much more personal and people loved it, as we could talk about their gift when we got back and they could see the enjoyment we got out of it.
