Planning a wedding abroad might seem daunting but it’s actually super easy – if you know who to call! We caught up with real bride Sarah who married her fiancé Matt in a stress-free ceremony in Italy, thanks to BestWeddingAway…
Why did you choose a wedding abroad?
When Matt proposed we were keen to start planning our wedding and avoid an overly long engagement. We wanted something different but were unsure where to start so we booked to go to the National Wedding Show in Birmingham. We had thought of marrying abroad due to a shared love and history of travelling around the world. At the Show we met the Best Wedding Away team and everything started to come together from that moment on – we mentioned our love of Italy and Lake Garda and everything snowballed from there.
What was the best thing about it?
We found planning the wedding abroad made most things much easier than they would have been at home, but some bits were harder. Once we had decided on the venues, the team did all the logistical planning for both us and our guests, which was fantastic and took the pressure off of us. The flip side was things we didn’t think we were concerned about, the best example being the flowers, became a big deal. As we couldn’t attend the florists ourselves it was hard at times to visualise the end results but Cate and Carla were very accommodating emailing back and forth details and pictures all the time.
What problems did you experience?
It was still more stressful picking the dress than anything else and worrying about wedding day malfunctions. BestWeddingAway did an amazing job and took care of all the big details for us.
Was planning your wedding abroad stressful?
All in all we found the planning process for the wedding was stress-free. We were able to email the team as and when we needed to, which was much simpler to fit around busy jobs – and if we needed to there was a UK number we could ring, too. On the day itself all our guests passed comment on how amazing it was, but also how seamlessly the day had run. Something I don’t think we would have achieved on our own.
Were you worried about the weather?
One reason for picking Italy alongside the amazing scenery at Lake Garda, was the climate. On the run up to our wedding day we started to worry following reports of storms, but Italy didn’t let us down and as all the locals had promised, the weather was beautiful.
What was your dress like? Who made it? What details did it have?
I found my ideal dress in a little boutique near Halifax, made in a vintage lace style that dropped to the floor with a V back and vintage brooch to the front. I wanted something that looked classic but different to what I’d seen other brides wearing and it seemed to please my guests – and my husband!
How did you personalise your wedding abroad?
The day itself was amazing. We couldn’t have asked for more, every aspect was as good, if not better, than expected. The boat ride we booked was unforgettable and added even more to the day, as did the Tenuta restaurant for our reception with its beautiful garden and views down to the lake. We had a slight hitch with music at the ceremony but no one ever knew as Cate and Roberto quickly found a replacement!
Would you recommend a wedding abroad to other brides?
Since coming back and reflecting on the day we are both even more positive that marrying abroad was the right thing to do. A lot of people have told me that their wedding day went past in a flash but it was not like that for us.
By keeping the guest list under 50 and having everyone join us in Italy, we were able to make the most of our time and thoroughly enjoy every moment rather than spending all of the day meeting and greeting.
We had no concerns during the day and were well looked after by everyone. It was so special being able to share one of our favourite places with our closest friends and family and we know that Italy is somewhere we will always return to in future years – now even more so. I can’t recommend marrying abroad enough based on our experience – it was everything we dreamed of and more.
