Love blossomed on this dancefloor for this happy couple, and they planned a lovely wedding day full of colour and charm!
Marli met Julian at work but things were purely professional until a few years later at a work reunion, when Jules stole a kiss on the dance floor towards the end of the night. “It was a better option than dancing!” he recalls… The couple spent almost every weekend together after that, “proof that good things happen in Swindon!” says Marli. They sort of ‘fell into’ their engagement, with no formal proposal, but decided in Christmas 2013 to plan the day for August 2014. They found their stunning venue – Manor Barn in Petersfield – with the help of Nicola from Behind the Scenes Events, who also sourced the majority of the suppliers and décor. Somehow it was all pulled together, and fabulous, in just six months!
Marli found her Martina Liana dress at Josephine’s Bridal in Southampton and loved that in it she felt so comfortable, plus it worked beautifully with her art deco engagement ring. Marli wore a headpiece from Trifle Rabbit and a Donna Crain necklace. Her shoes were Rachel Simpson. Marli chose her four closest friends as bridesmaids and she had one bridesman!
The short ceremony, that included readings from bridesman Aaron, was interrupted at one point by Jules’ phone, which rang loudly during Marli’s vows. It made everyone really laugh. The reception was a super-stylish event with all the stunning details provided by Behind The Scenes Events. It was a riot of colour and art deco details, with every detail thought of for a brilliant celebration!
Marli sees Jules in a suit every day for his job, so they wanted something more formal for their wedding day, and so chose navy blue tails for Jules and his groomsmen. Jules insisted on his beloved Manchester City appearing somewhere during the day, so chose a light blue waistcoat and cravat to complete his look! Claire from UptownCurls and Evie at Made Up created Marli’s beautiful bridal look, including eye make-up much stronger than Marli would have gone for, but she loved it! The wedding breakfast was a BBQ provided by Jacaranda, and later guests were served pizza from the back of a Land Rover by the Mobile Pizzeria.
The speeches were a particular highlight – they all ran over, but nobody complained. Best man Chris really got the audience involved in the stories of Jules growing up he had planted props around the room to help bring the stories to life. Marli and Jules still laugh remembering them now! The couple’s first dance was to Toploader’s Dancing in the Moonlight, which got all of their guests up and dancing with them!
The flowers were organised by Behind The Scenes Events, in association with Sarah at Penny Lane Flowers. The flowers were used to create pew ends and arrangements in apple crates for the ceremony. Peacock-inspired fans provided a backdrop for the ceremony on the wall of the barn. The tables were decorated with jam jars and bottles covered in gold glitter and navy ribbon, holding bright flowers on gold place mats. Navy ribbon was tied around the napkins with a peacock feather in each one. Table names were in gold frames.
The bride and groom’s chairs had ‘Mr’ and ‘Mrs’ written on them on gold glitter and chalkboards around the Barn told guests what they could expect during the day, and the menu. Julian brewed an ale called ‘the Big Commitment’ especially for the day, and guests were each given a bottle as a favour. Later in the evening, guests enjoyed a sweet treat table including locally sourced goodies like navy macarons, handmade marshmallows and meringue kisses.
