Wedding Ideas’ Izzy enjoyed an Indian Ocean adventure on two gorgeous islands, courtesy of LUX*! Read her review here…
Only a 40-minute flight apart, Mauritius and Reunion offer the perfect balance between a relaxed tropical beach break and a cultural adventure holiday. Mauritius is famed for its clear ocean and stunning white beaches, while the dramatic mountain landscape of Reunion is enough to make any honeymoon special.
Where to stay?
I was lucky enough to visit two fantastic LUX* resorts – one on each island! One of three LUX* resorts on Mauritius – the LUX* Belle Mare – is the last word in luxury. The resort boasts the largest swimming pool in Mauritius and is situated right on a stretch of pristine beach, giving you plenty of space to relax and sunbathe. The fantastic honeymoon suites are modern, spacious and airy, but if you’re looking to get away from it all, you can hire one of the resort’s private villas, complete with your own pool!
As the first five-star resort on the entire island, the LUX* Ile de la Reunion sets the bar high with its lush green gardens and traditional French colonial style. You can eat in the incredible beach-front Creole restaurant while overlooking the coral-sheltered lagoon, or take a wander through the resort’s fresh herb garden. Although the LUX* ethos of ‘lighter, brighter’ luxury runs through both resorts, they are very different in style and feel – which is why we recommend both to get the true experience!
The staff are extremely friendly and ready to accommodate all your requests, from bringing you fresh coconut water on the beach to spritzing your towels with the resort’s signature refreshing orange blossom scent. They can also help you book those special experiences to make your honeymoon truly unforgettable, so don’t be a stranger to them!
What is there to do?
Mauritius is all about taking advantage of the crystal-clear sea – you can enjoy a huge range of watersports including snorkelling, diving, deep-sea fishing and windsurfing, all aided by the resort’s experienced staff. If you’re exhausted after all that, relax in the LUX* Belle Mare’s newest beach bar, Beach Rouge, with its stylish décor by celebrity designer Kelly Hoppen, delicious Mediterranean menu and incredible cocktails.
If you and your h2b are foodies, then the LUX* Belle Mare might just be your dream destination! As well as Beach Rouge, the resort also offers four other amazing restaurants, with food ranging from traditional Indian Ocean fare such as fresh palm heart salad and spicy seafood curry, to exotic Far Eastern dishes and English afternoon teas. You can even help yourself to the LUX* brand of low-fat ice-cream, ICI – they create new exciting flavours every day! I recommend the pineapple and chilli.
Reunion island has a different feel entirely – it’s said that while their Mauritian cousins look to the sea, the inhabitants of Reunion live by the mountain. The dramatic landscape truly has to be seen to be believed! Take an exciting 4×4 tour of the island’s active volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, or a breathtaking helicopter tour over the island’s National Park. You’ll see sheer cliffs of over 1200m, tumbling waterfalls and lush forests.
If you fancy a few activities closer to your hotel room, explore the palm-lined gardens to find a giant chess set, open tennis courts and a beach-front cinema screen. You might even stumble across the Secret Bar featured at all LUX* resorts – although it moves around from night to night, so you’ll have to search for it!
Relax and unwind
With their focus on healthy living and spiritual wellbeing, you know that you’ll return from a LUX* resort honeymoon feeling better than when you arrived. Their spa and fitness program LUX* Me offers the best in relaxation, with the beautiful spa at the Belle Mare resort being a particular highlight. From the wonderful spa treatments tailored to each guest to the tranquil private pool, you might just want to spend all day there!
You can also enjoy relaxing yoga classes, whether in the peace and quiet of the gardens or on the beach as the sun sets, and learn how to cook yourself a healthy Indian Ocean meal. If you’d rather just enjoy the beauty of the island with your new husband, then you can opt to have a romantic secluded meal in a candlelit gazebo, or in the ocean with the waves lapping at your feet. Just sip your fresh coconut water and relax!
For such luxurious resorts, LUX* Belle Mare and Ile de la Reunion are also surprisingly family-friendly, so if you’re bringing along the little ones you can rest assured that they’ll be more than catered for. Both resorts provide fun outdoor activities that reflect the feel of island life, including art classes, treasure hunts and their very own Teddy Tennis program designed to introduce young children to the sport. Luckily, the resorts are so spacious that there’s no chance of being disturbed while you both take some time out to relax!
Can you get married there?
Unfortunately, as Reunion island is technically part of France, they cannot offer weddings. Happily though, you can marry in Mauritius. LUX* offers three levels of wedding package – ‘Light’, ‘Delight’ and ‘Infinity’ – depending on your budget and what you’d like as part of the day. An expert wedding co-ordinator will handle everything from exotic flowers for your bouquet to live musicians as you eat your wedding breakfast – you can even book a romantic lovebird massage for two to eliminate any chance of pre-wedding stress!
