From holiday romance to cross country lovers and finally husband and wife, Sarah and Joey’s relationship really did go the distance. “We met while on holiday in Marbella. A few weeks later, Joey flew up to Glasgow for our first date, then I travelled down to London for our second, when he asked me to be his girlfriend. It was make or break and totally romantic,” Sarah smiles.

And with their love story firmly rooted in Marbella, it only made sense that Joey choose the same location to propose. “I heard my name called and went outside. There was music playing, rose petals all around the pool, a bottle of Champagne… and Joey on one knee! It was so magical and intimate, just the two of us.”

The couple also chose to tie the knot in sun-soaked Spain.

“I wanted my wedding dress to be traditional and tie in with Spanish culture, so I chose the ‘Nilay’ Pronovias Atelier design.”

“My gown, from Kavelle Couture in Edinburgh, was a mermaid style with a princess overskirt, fashioned from lace and tulle with gemstone and embroidery appliqués. Because the dress was from their Atelier collection, it did cost more than I had planned to spend. It was just so spectacular I couldn’t say no!”

Sarah accessorised with a Pronovias veil, a headpiece designed in New York and ice blue shoes from the Sophia Webster bridal collection.

“I wanted shoes that I could wear again and I adored the crystal heels and ‘wifey for lifey’ motifs on the soles.”

Groom Joey opted for a custom-made suit from tailors Clements & Church, based in Oxford. “He wore a gorgeous black tuxedo. They embroidered our wedding date inside the lapel and he looked perfect next to me in my dress. Joey never cries, but there he was at the altar with tears in his eyes when I walked down the aisle – I couldn’t believe it!”

The bride and groom’s sisters joined Sarah’s bridal party, wearing black Sherri Hill gowns. “They were strapless mermaid designs with beaded lace peplums. Diamanté hair clips and gold Valentino court shoes were the perfect accessories to complete their stylish looks.”

Dominique Laird from Golden Tarts Marbella took care of the ladies’ beauty looks. “We chose a golden brown smoky eye with coral pink lips.”

“We had been in Spain for a week before the big day, so luckily we’d had time to get glowy tans.”

Steven Hewitt styled their locks, creating big and bouncy blow-dried styles that looked beautiful with their carefully chosen hair accessories.

“We had a traditional Catholic mass in a Spanish cathedral. We were very lucky because our parish priest from Glasgow came over to celebrate it with us in Spain!”

The bride walked down the aisle with her father to harpist, Anna Sargent’s rendition of ‘Ave Maria’ and her cousin played the Scottish bagpipes as they exited. “We chose ‘Love is Patient’ from Corinthians for one reading – the words are perfect for a wedding mass. It was so special to exchange vows.”

“We received a Papal blessing from the Vatican and Pope Francis himself after our Catholic ceremony!”

Sarah, Joey and their guests continued on to Villa Padierna Palace Hotel for the reception. “We dined on a lobster and avocado salad to start, fillet of beef for the main course and chocolate tart for dessert. A Spanish guitarist played during the canapé and cocktail hour. Flamenco dancers took over to entertain us during the meal.

For our wedding décor, I tried to keep everything traditional, elegant and beautiful. Wanderlust Stationery in Glasgow designed my invitations and Dovile Stationery created the orders of service. We decorated the staircase with a cascading display of candles and rose petals, added J&S letters for a personalised touch and flowers for all of the tables.”

Marbella-based L&N Floral Design created the arrangements, which had a stylish white and green palette.

“My bouquet was a gorgeous ball of white peonies, wrapped in crystal rosary beads.”

“Four tables had huge candelabra centrepieces with white roses, orchids, peonies and wildflowers, while the other four had tree displays with suspended bauble candles.”

The cake embraced a similar style, showcasing five spectacular white tiers. “Alyson Thomas from Wedding Cakes Marbella created it for us, featuring a selection of vanilla, chocolate and lemon tiers with fruit fillings. Each was beautiful and tasted incredible.” For the gentlemen guests, the favours were also tasty treats in the form of Scottish whisky. Ladies were gifted traditional white Spanish fans.

After cutting the cake, the R&B band CoolFire took to the stage to kick off the party.

“We also love jazz music, so we chose Frank Sinatra’s ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ for our first dance.”

We wanted to have something to look forward to after our wedding, so we booked our honeymoon with Best At Travel for later in the year. We will spend a week each in Dubai and the Maldives.”
