After a fabulous year with the Olympics, Paralympics, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and much more, British couples will feel more inspired than ever to give their wedding theme a patriotic makeover. Here’s how to create a truly beautiful British-themed big day…
Wave the flag
The most iconic artwork you can use for your stationery and decorations is the Union flag. Although we wouldn’t recommend smothering your reception with flags, the odd one here and there will make a statement and reaffirm your theme for your guests. Use as bunting around your venue or perhaps give flags as favours at each guest’s place.
Three simple colours
Of course, we’re talking about red, white and blue. These don’t all have to be bright shades, but hints here and there with balloons and table crystals should do the trick. You could even give your bridesmaids a colour each for a multi-coloured and oh-so patriotic bridal party look. Or, if you’d prefer, make them all blue and that’s your ‘something blue’ sorted!
British designers
Other than stealing Kate Middleton’s long-sleeved lace wedding dress style, the best way to pay homage to Britain with what you wear is to buy a British designer’s dress. Designed and made in the UK, you can wear your gown with pride – we recommend the latest collections by Wedding Ideas Award-winning Sassi Holford, Suzanne Neville and Stewart Parvin.
A British venue
There are thousands of gorgeous venues around the UK, so you’ll be spoilt for choice when you start your search. Country manor houses are a great choice, but if you want to play King and Queen for the day, castle venues should be your starting point. Many of the National Trust properties are available for weddings, too. Or alternatively if you want a wonderful wedding in the capital, why not choose a funky venue like Tower Bridge or an iconic venue like The Dorchester?
Vintage chic
Wartime details may seem like a strange choice for a wedding theme, but you’d be surprised how great they can look! Dot empty SPAM tins and mustard jars around the venue, filled with a few handpicked posies. Your stationery could be ‘(couple’s names) NEED YOU!’ like the old wartime posters, and ‘keep calm and carry on’ could be the slogan for your big day, too.
High tea
Us Brits love our tea, so crack out the vintage crockery and give guests some cake and biscuits along with a brew after the meal. We love Idyllic Days and Eclectic Bliss for vintage crockery hire. Decorate with traditional bunting and your look is complete.
Music to our ears
Throughout the ages, Britain has produced some of the best musicians the world has ever known. Consider a tribute band of The Beatles to get generations young and old in the party mood, or if you prefer a rockier vibe, hire a band that play tunes by The Police, Queen, Oasis and more.
