“Our proposal was a bit unconventional really, but it suited us down to the ground. We were in Norwich for a spot of shopping and lunch on my birthday. Over lunch, Dion told me that if I found a ring that fitted, we could get engaged. The first I looked at we didn’t try on, but it was beautiful with three diamonds, and eventually we came back to it. When I tried it on, it was a perfect fit! He never did formally ask, ‘will you marry me?’ and I’d never wanted him to get down on one knee, so it was perfect!”

A Maggie Sottero gown awaited Cathryn in Catrina’s Bridal. “I was heavily pregnant at the usual time to order your wedding dress, so I had to purchase mine closer to the wedding instead. I fell in love with the beautiful vintage style of my dress and the bead detailing!”

The bride accessorised with Monsoon shoes, choosing Marks and Spencer earrings for her something new, borrowing her mother’s veil, and wearing her sister-in-law’s garter for her something old.

“I had my grandmother’s blue handkerchief pinned into my dress in tribute to her, too.”

Dion looked dapper in a Greenwoods suits and Marks and Spencer shoes. “When I saw him on the day he looked handsome and relieved,” laughs Cathryn. “He wouldn’t let on that he was nervous but I think he was. The whole thing felt so surreal and I was just so excited!”

The bride’s sister and daughter attended her as bridesmaids. “I’d always wanted a navy bridesmaid dress for my sister and the long and flowing chiffon design we chose was just perfect. The neckline was really different and caught my eye.”

Experts from Butterfly Hair styled the bride’s hair for the big day, with a friend stepping in to create their makeup looks. “We used Lancôme lipstick and foundation, MAC false eyelashes and the Urban Decay ‘Naked’ eye palette.”

Cathryn and Dion tied the knot with a civil ceremony at their beautiful barn wedding, with the bride’s mother walking her down the aisle. “We kept things simple with a few readings from Dante Gabriel Rosetti and E.E. Cummings. Laughing with our registrar during the ceremony added a lovely personal touch as we remembered his advice during our pre-wedding meeting.”

“We served afternoon tea rather than a sit-down three-course dinner for our wedding breakfast!”

Guests dined on delicate vanilla and chocolate cakes, buttery shortbread and indulgent savoury cheese scones. “We had a large buffet planned for later in the evening, so we wanted something small but special. Our sister-in-law made it all for us as a wedding gift.”

Decorating the entire barn themselves was no small task. The couple dressed their venue with bunting and fairy lights. Tables were dresses with garlands of eucalyptus coupled with an abundance of jam jars overflowing with fresh blooms and prettily perfumed lavender. Florence and Flowers crated the buttonholes and bouquets using dried flowers in vintage colours. And like so many brides, Cathryn just couldn’t imagine carrying anything but peonies, so they were incorporated too.

“Cake is important to us, so we had four!”

The bride’s mother created their traditional fruit cake, with a friend gifting them chocolate, vanilla and lemon cakes to complete their decadent dessert table.

Inline Events didn’t only provide the DJ for this couple’s celebrations, they also supplied the bar and chair covers too. “Our first dance was to ‘Piano Man’ by Billy Joel. It’s not a romantic song, but it’s one we both love. From our first time hearing it on the radio, we knew that it would be our wedding song one day. We followed it up with ‘Running’ by James Bay – it’s such a beautiful song.”

Guests gifted honeymoon contributions to the couple, which will see them indulge with a secluded week away, secreted in the middle of a forest in a charming lodge complete with a hot tub. “We couldn’t imagine going without our daughter, so we are turning it into a family-moon rather than a conventional honeymoon.”
