Emily & Joe

We went for cocktails at the Oxo Tower on London’s South Bank in 2013. Joe ordered “the most pudding thing on the menu” which was love at first sight for me and my sweet tooth! We haven’t gone a day without speaking since then.

We were staying in an amazing waterfront villa on Lake Como in Italy.

“After a day of taking boats across the lake and walking in the mountains, we cooked dinner and Joe asked me if I’d had the perfect day.”

He then asked if it could get any better and got down on one knee and asked if I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him – of course I said yes! The gorgeous gold diamond ring was by Alex Monroe, one of my favourite designers. The couple staying in the apartment downstairs got engaged on the same day, too!

My sister and mum were with me when I found my Oleg Cassini dress in David’s Bridal after visiting three other shops. My mum and I burst into tears and I knew it was the one, featuring Chantilly lace and an elegant off-the-shoulder style and drop back. I also purchased a second fitted, floor-length, 1920’s style dress to dance in comfortably in the evening.

I kept accessories fairly minimal to let the dress be the centrepiece, adding gold heels from Dorothy Perkins, a cathedral-length veil and a pair of earrings I already owned from Accessorize.

While we were holidaying in Vietnam, Joe had his trousers tailor made by kimmytailor.com, pairing them with a waistcoat and jacket from BHS and a champagne tie from Ties Planet. He looked amazing and gave me butterflies!

It was a hard decision but eventually I settled on just two bridesmaids. As one of them lived in Norway and was pregnant, we chose two different dresses, one that was blush from maternity store Seraphine and the other a pale pink maxi dress.

“After a lesson at a MAC store, I decided to do my own hair and makeup, using heated rollers and MAC lotion, primer and foundation.”

We said “I do” in Winchester Hall on the top floor of the Manor House of Hooke Court. It actually used to be a chapel so it worked perfectly for us, giving us the civil ceremony we wanted while still enjoying a church-like setting.

We did something completely different for our wedding food, catering ourselves! We put together a summer picnic style banquet of salads including minted pea and feta, Moroccan spiced roast vegetables with couscous and more. Guests also brought pulled pork, marinated chicken wings, focaccia and desserts including pavlova, fruitcake and rocky road using Ferrero Rocher! Servingware was hired from South West Event Hire and, in the evening, Moby Mick’s fish and chips van provided guests with a yummy feast.

Our friends helped us to make almost a thousand paper cranes that we strung up to create ceremony and reception backdrops and we added lots of candles and balloons from Pretty Little Party Shop.

At the ceremony, my sister and cousin had created a foliage wrapped arch with more cranes and tea light lanterns hanging from it.

“Richard at Clement’s Farm provided buckets of wild flowers for us which my auntie then made up into table displays and bouquets.”

I used the rest to make the buttonholes and to decorate our cake!

The four-tier vanilla naked cake was homemade by me! It included a vanilla buttercream and strawberry jam filling and was decorated with lots of wild flowers and fresh fruit. The cake toppers were inspired by the League of Legends videogame we both love!

Knowing our ceremony room would be hot, we attached our orders of service to ice lolly sticks so they could double up as fans. We also made our own fridge magnet invitations, adding gingham ribbon for our picnic-meets- summer fete theme.

“Tiny beaded paper cranes were our favours as well as walnut boats filled with wax and sails – it’s a family tradition of mine to make them on New Year’s Eve and then sail them away, making a wish for the year to come.”

Games included welly wanging and boules!
