See how newlyweds Rebecca and Leigh added an extra special and emotional touch to their big day by supporting Alzheimer’s Society…
We all want our nearest and dearest to be present on our special day, but for many of us this sadly isn’t possible. This could be because a loved one is no longer with us, or they have an illness that prevents them from witnessing one of the most important days of your life.
There are currently 800,000 people living with dementia in the UK, and this is set to rise to one million by 2021. If you know or have lost someone with dementia, supporting Alzheimer’s Society is a meaningful way to honour them and include them in your special day, whilst raising awareness about dementia and the Society.
Whether it’s through buying their wedding favours, taking a collection on the day, or asking for donations instead of gifts, your support will help them to continue their national campaign for the rights of people with dementia, research that could one day find a cure and continue to deliver vital local services.
Rebecca and Leigh married in August 2013 and were proud to include Alzheimer’s Society pin badges as favours for their guests. Rebecca’s family friend, Pat, was diagnosed with dementia in 2012 and soon became too ill to attend their wedding. As Pat had been a big part of Rebecca’s childhood, acting as another grandparent, the couple wanted her to be part of their day somehow. “We came across the Alzheimer’s Society wedding favours that you can buy, and thought it was a really good idea. We realised that Pat wouldn’t be able to come to the wedding so it was a real tribute to her,” explains Leigh. “It was our way of making Pat involved, even though she couldn’t be there,” Rebecca continues.
“We had the badges on every table. Seeing everybody wearing them ignited something in my heart. It made me think of Pat everywhere I looked. It was really special to be able to create awareness of this cruel disease at the same time as recognising Pat.”
