Diamond engagement rings come in all shapes and sizes. We’ve put together five of the most popular engagement ring styles from our favourite celebrities.
Marquise shaped diamond
Michael Douglas proposed to Catherine Zeta Jones after just 10 months of dating with a beautiful vintage, marquise shaped, 10 carat diamond set horizontally. The ring itself was inspired by the 1920s with 28 smaller stones surrounding the large diamond. Designed by Fred Leighton it’s worth a whopping £1,25 million.
Emerald cut diamond
Emerald cut diamond engagement rings are a timeless classic and have been the symbol of affection for many famous women over the past century. Grace Kelly was presented with a 12 carat, emerald cut engagement ring, which featured baguette diamonds on each side by Prince Rainer of Monaco in 1955. At the time, the Hollywood trend for actresses was to wear large, statement rings, so his gift to Grace certainly didn’t disappoint. Another iconic woman who wasn’t afraid to be bold with her jewellery was Elizabeth Taylor. In 1956, her third husband-to-be Michael Todd proposed to her with an enormous emerald cut diamond weighing almost 30 carats – a definite heavyweight in the rings category.
Asscher cut diamond
Fans of more vintage styles, Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon were both lucky receivers of Asscher-cut (square) diamonds. Chris Martin chose a simply stunning and very unusual micro pave frame with double band for Gwyn’s diamond setting whereas Ryan Philippe went for a 1920’s art deco style setting for Reese.
Oval cut solitaire diamond
When Tom Cruise publicly admitted his love for Katie Holmes by sofa jumping on the Oprah Wimphrey show, we were wondering how weird his proposal was going to be. Tom went down the traditional route and chose a £156,000, 5 carat Edwardian style, oval cut solitaire diamond set in rose gold and platinum with intricate pave detail. Rumour has it he proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower – risky business with a ring so dainty and precious.
A beautiful ring for a beautiful lady, Seal proposed to Heidi Klum with a rare Lorraine Schwartz 10 carat canary diamond set in in yellow gold. Not the most conventional proposal, but definitely one of the most romantic, Seal asked Heidi to marry him by flying her to a glacier and proposing inside an igloo – amazing!
