Choosing who’s in your wedding party might be more challenging than you originally thought
Everyone knows that planning a wedding comes with its ups and downs – choosing a venue that ticks all the boxes, finding a colour scheme that you both agree on, selecting the perfect wedding cake flavour… there’s a lot to think about.
And yet for some couples, nothing quite compares to the stress that comes with deciding who to include in your wedding party. How many bridesmaids should you have? Should you really include all your best friends, and will the groom’s sister be annoyed if she doesn’t make the cut?
Should your wedding party be reserved for family only?
In fact, it turns out than one in four couples have admitted to squabbling with their friends and families about their wedding party, with over 30 per cent of engaged couples opting to ‘keep it in the family’.
In a study conducted by One4all Gift Cards, 17 per cent of those surveyed said they chose based on who they were closest to at the time of the wedding, while 7 per cent said their decision was based on who they had known the longest.
That said, 62 per cent also confessed that they’re no longer in touch with every person in their wedding party, and nine per cent even admitted to no longer seeing any of their bridesmaids or groomsmen since their big day.
How many bridesmaids should you have?
The average wedding party is made up of just 3.9 people – 2.18 bridesmaids and 1.72 groomsmen – so it’s perhaps not surprising that it’s such a widely debated issue.
“It is interesting to see that choosing bridesmaids and groomsmen is such a bone of contention for so many British couples,” says Rachel Delaney of One4all Gift Cards.
“Planning a wedding should be one of the most exciting and fun times in a person’s life, yet it seems that worrying about decisions such as who will be bridesmaid or groomsmen is dampening that.”

Every bride wants their special day to be unique, but often the best ideas have already been done before. To ensure your celebrations are truly one-of-a-kind, these are the wedding trends to avoid…
1. TOO MANY BRIDESMAIDS
Gone are the days of having one or two bridesmaids; now, “bridesmaid armies” are the hot new trend, with some opting for as many as 10 close chums to accompany them to the alter.
“The ‘bridesmaid army’ trend swiftly came over from the US and has taken hold of wedding parties everywhere in the UK,” says Hamish Shephard, founder of bridebook.co.uk. This can be great for photo-ops, he says, “but it can sometimes take away from the ceremony, as they get crammed up by the altar.”
This trend, however, is slowly being faded out thanks to the new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. “We’re already seeing [her] decision to have no adult bridesmaids and to opt for flower girls instead shifting this perspective towards a more low-key bridal party.”
2. OVER-THE-TOP WEDDING CAKES
Wedding cake trends also have seen a huge transformation in recent years. “The humble iced fruitcake wedding cake is long gone, due to ‘Instagram wars’ for that perfect cake shot,” says Shephard.
“From drip cakes and naked cakes, then onto doughnut walls and eight-foot macaroon towers, and recently even Meghan Markle’s 154lb deconstructed lemon and elderflower wedding cake! This is a trend that’s becoming increasingly competitive.”
It may prove a hit with most, but this popular gimmick was also included in Weil’s list of the most overdone trends. While some couples choose to spell out their initials, others opt for their own wedding hashtag or go for a simple “congratulations”.
When it comes to dramatic bridal entrances, “we’ve seen it all,” says Hamish Shephard. “From the bride literally being ballooned into the ceremony, to being walked in by a dressed-up dinosaur, the bride’s entrance has become yet another aspect of the wedding that can be blown up to unimaginable heights.”
“We’re are all for breaking tradition, like the growing trend of brides walking themselves down the aisle – as eight per cent of UK brides did in 2017, but maybe save the dinosaurs for the amusement park!”
It’s such an honour being asked to be a bridesmaid – it is, after all, the biggest day of the bride’s life, and she wants you right by her side through all of it. But, taking on such a role can prove to be pricey…
New research from American Express has found that bridesmaids spend over £450 for the privilege of being a bridesmaid. This may seem like a ridiculous figure, but once you factor in the hen do, gifts, travel and accommodation for the big day, numbers can easily add up.
Average spend – Usher
Average spend – Bridesmaids
It’s not only bridesmaid who have to fork out for the big day – ushers’ wallets will take even more of a hit at £553 per wedding. And you can double those figures if two of your besties are tying the knot in the same year.
What’s more, attending a wedding as a guest isn’t all that cheaper either; 32% of Brits will attend at least one wedding in 2018, spending an average of £303 on each event. And with UK adults planning to attend on average three weddings this year, the bill nears £1,000!
Average spend per wedding
Hair and beauty
For wedding guests, the largest expense is the wedding gift at £57, followed by hotels, outfits and travel. However, 68% say they plan to wear the same outfit at more than one wedding rather than forking out for a new look each time.
blow LTD reveal their top five beauty treatments to help you and your bridal party prepare for the big day
There’s a lot to remember when it comes to planning your wedding: table plans, colour schemes, flowers… the list seems never ending. So you’d be forgiven for forgetting about yourself during this time.
Luckily, bridal hair, make-up and beauty treatment experts blow LTDare here to help. They’ve given us their pick of the top beauty services a bride should be thinking about before and on her big day.
Nails worthy of the ring
With a gorgeous engagement ring already on show and the wedding band to come, your hands are going to be getting a lot of attention in the coming weeks, so you want to ensure your nails are looking their best for the occasion.
You’ll of course want a manicure for the engagement shoot (no one wants chipped nails) but don’t forget about the big day either! A pamper session the night before, either on your own or with your bridal party, provides a great opportunity to relax and banish any pre-wedding jitters. And if you’re heading out on honeymoon straight after the reception, opt for a gel polish, this will ensure there’s no chip in sight for up to two weeks.
A de-stressing massage
Planning can be stressful, there’s no denying it. With so many different things to think about, it can be easy to let it take over – so it’s important to make sure you’re taking time for yourself, and a massage is the perfect way to do this.
Whether you need a relaxing aromatherapy or an invigorating deep tissue massage, it provides the perfect opportunity not only to relax but to clear your head of all the things on the to-do list.
What’s more, the improved circulation a massage brings will add a healthy glow to your skin. To get the full relaxing benefits of a massage, it’s best to have monthly treatments, but if budget won’t allow it at least treat yourself to one in the run up – you won’t regret it!
The pre-wedding wax
With many brides nowadays opting against traditional gowns and selecting something shorter, there’s even more chance of skin being on show, and a wax is a great option for removing any hair should you want to.
Ideally, you’ll get into a routine of waxing every four weeks on the run up to the wedding (as the growth cycle of hairs on areas like your legs can take some time to sync up), but if you’ve not thought ahead, fear not. Booking in two weeks before the big day will ensure any redness has gone down while still leaving you silky smooth.
The natural lash lift
Whether you love the natural look or prefer a glamorous style, an LVL lash lift is the perfect pre-wedding treatment for any bride. LVL lifts, tints and curls your lashes, so when the big day rolls around you may not even want to wear mascara at all (ideal for brides who are a bit worried about running mascara).
Give yourself a trial run a few months before so you can plan your make-up accordingly, then booking in one week before the wedding for the final lift. LVL lasts around six weeks, meaning your lashes will still look amazing not only on the big day, but long after the honeymoon as well.
Big-day beautifying for everyone
On a list dedicated to bridal beauty, who could miss out the wedding day itself? Leaving your hair and make-up and your bridal parties hair and make-up to a professional means you can relax and enjoy being pampered on the morning, safe in the knowledge your experts will create looks that will last all day and look great in photos. Check out 25 of the most breathtaking wedding photos from 2017.
Our stylists will also travel out to wherever you’re getting ready, which means you don’t even have to worry about waking up early to get to a salon, so there’s more time for beauty sleep (or prosecco!)
If you’re a little nervous about leaving this to someone else, a trial is a fantastic opportunity to get to know your stylist and plan out your dream bridal look. Book in a trial run two months before the wedding to allow plenty of time – you’ll also have your dress and theme chosen by then, which will help you decide on the style you’d like.

With news that Meghan Markle will be making a speech at the royal wedding reception on Saturday, is it time to say goodbye to the age-old tradition of letting the men do the talking?
The royal wedding countdown is on, and it’s reported that after the ceremony at Windsor Castle, Meghan Markle will stand up in front of 800 guests and make a speech dedicated to her new husband, Prince Harry.
The actress will be the first royal bride to break from tradition by delivering a speech at her wedding reception – and while it’s completely unheard of in the royal circuit, it turns out it’s pretty rare in the public wedding circuit, too.
In fact, a 2016 YouGov poll revealed that only 16% of those surveyed believe that the bride should give a speech at her wedding, in contrast with the 51% who thought the groom should do the talking.
Should more brides be making wedding speeches?
So is it time for women to stand up and be heard? Professional speech writers Great Speech Writing certainly think so, and are now campaigning for change, advocating an equal voice for women at weddings.
“A wedding is a celebration of two people’s love,” says Lawrence Bernstein, founder of Great Speech Writing. “The guests tend to be drawn equally from both families. The costs are increasingly shared too. Surely its only fair that both sides should get a chance to express themselves?”
“Some of our very best wedding speeches are given by brides, bridesmaids, and mums of the bride and groom. Surely these should cease to be the exception to the rule?”
Only 5% of the wedding speech enquiries received by Great Speech Writing are from a bride, mother of a bride, bridesmaid or maid of honour. But with Ms Markle as a role model for many, it’s now hoped that more women will be inspired to follow in her footsteps.
With seven seasons of Suits behind her, at least Meghan shouldn’t have trouble remembering her lines!

Blush – it looks great on everyone, fits with your colour scheme, falls within budget and complements your bridal gown. Finding beautiful dresses for your best girls can feel like a challenge, but these blush bridesmaid dresses are sure to look good on anyone.
This edit of 11 soft pink bridesmaid dresses showcases stunning styles, from simple and elegant to embellished, strapless and even a stylish jumpsuit. Your best girls are bound to find a design they love in this list – one that they can wear again, too!
Deputy Editor, Becci Clubb reveals how she ticked another element off her wedding to-do list: dressing the bridesmaids.
No matter how many bridesmaids you have chosen, agreeing on what they wear can be tricky. Naturally, they will be different heights, shapes and sizes, and it’s not always a ‘one design suits all’ situation.
I have chosen to keep my bridal party small and actually found searching for dresses to be relatively easy. We only visited three boutiques for the bridesmaid dresses, rather than the 10 I searched through for my own gown!
Throughout my planning, I’ve imagined that my bridesmaids will wear either a slate blue or a soft grey colour, but a visit to The Wedding Gallery in London, while I was looking for my wedding dress, threw a bit of a spanner in the works. Grey just wasn’t my sister’s colour!
She tried on a couple of gowns (on a whim, as we were there!) and we found that a pale green suited her best. After that, I left my options open, considering anything from soft green to taupe, pale blue to peach.
We then visited a boutique while we were away on holiday and found that we both really liked Dessy bridesmaid dresses. They have such a huge selection of styles and colours. My sister, and maid of honour, tried on a blue-green colour and we both really liked it.
After searching for another stockist so that my other bridesmaid could see if she liked the dresses too, I found 14 and Sixpence in Taunton. I spoke to Cathy, the owner, and discovered that the shop had over 60 styles from Dessy for my bridesmaids to try on and choose from, with most of them available in the colour I now thought I wanted. Brilliant news!
Both of my bridesmaids, my mum and my fiancé’s mum joined me on the visit to 14 and Sixpence. It was lovely having everyone there because we actually made a decision for both the girls’ dresses that day! We all had a say on what we thought looked best and the girls highlighted which gowns they liked most and felt most comfortable in.
In the end they chose slightly different necklines, but with the same skirt and similar detailing. Mix and match maids is a look I really like, so I was pleased too. Cathy was so lovely, helping us pick out styles that would suit the girls and advising us with sizing.
I would always recommend going to a specialist boutique in your search for bridesmaid dresses. Not only does it make the experience really exciting and special (for you and for your maids too), but it also means you know the dresses will fit perfectly. 14 and Sixpence also stocks bridal gowns, veils, shoes and accessories, showcasing collections from Enzoani, Eternity, Watters, Wendy Makin, Rebecca Ingram, Dessy and Rainbow Club.
When it comes to bridesmaid dress shopping, here are some things to keep in mind:
Always go to a boutique
This will ensure the dresses are a perfect fit and length, as well as ensuring that the colour, if your bridesmaids are wearing the same, will be exact colour matches.
Keep an open mind
What you think you would like your bridesmaids to wear isn’t necessarily what will look best on them.
Listen to what your girls are saying
Uncomfortable, unhappy bridesmaids are not what you want on your wedding day. Be prepared to compromise.
Don’t forget alterations
Make sure you allow for alterations when you budget for bridesmaid dresses too. They will need tweaks here and there and, most likely, the hem will need taking up.
Consider your bridal outfit
You want the gowns to go together, so if your dress features lots of lace, why not have bridesmaid gowns with a lace bodice? Sparkly bridal gown? How about a crystal beaded belt on your bridesmaid dresses?
Think about where you’ll be saying I do
As with all of your other decisions, you need to take into account your chosen wedding venue and overall theme. Art Deco beaded bridesmaid dresses might look out of place at a beachside wedding, while 1950’s-inspired dresses with circular skirts might not suit a black tie theme.
Remember the season you will wed in
Your bridesmaids won’t thank you for thin material and short sleeves in the winter! Dress them appropriately for the weather as best you can and accessorise with shrugs and faux furs if you need to.

Wedding Dress Shopping: 10 Questions To Ask Your Bridal Boutique.
You’re about to purchase possibly the most important dress you’ll EVER wear and it’s important you get your whole bridal boutique experience right! You’ll want the right setting when choosing your dress, but you’ll also want to think beyond that…
What happens after you’ve chosen your dress and paid your deposit? Read this expert wedding dress shopping guide to ensure you have the best bridal experience possible!
1. Will you be the only bride in the boutique?
Do you want an exclusive, special experience or would you prefer a slightly more ‘high street’ approach? If there is more than one bride-to-be trying dresses, will you get to see the entire range?
The experience that you have will be quite different from shop to shop. Some boutiques are small and only have one bride at a time out of necessity, others (like Sass & Grace) have ample space but to offer the entire boutique exclusively to just one bride at a time. Then there are others that can have two or more brides-to-be in at the same time choosing their wedding dress. Consider the kind of experience that you want.
2. What is the boutique and its location like?
Is the location private and exclusive for you to try on dresses without being disturbed by prying eyes or passers by looking in? Likes alot of brides, you’ll want to keep your chosen dress a secret until the big day!
What kind of mirror do they have, will you be able to see yourself from all angles? With such pretty backs on some dresses, are you going to be able to see the detail when you are trying them on? Always consider the size, facilities and location of your chosen boutique.
3. What are the online reviews like?
Don’t just look at the ‘star’ rating invest time and have a read of what the real brides say. If a boutique gives a really exceptional experience their brides will go out of their way to let others know and that boutique will have a lot of favourable reviews. You will spend quite a few hours with your dress shop, choosing and then having your dress fitted, so devote a little time to reading the reviews. It’s probably the only truly impartial view that you will get from a cross-section of brides that have been through every step of the journey. It should give you a realistic idea of what you can expect and it will help you choose the boutiques that you would like to visit.
4. Is there a large and varied range?
What’s your budget? Does the boutique stock a range of dresses from designers that are within your budget?
What’s your style? From boho bride to city chic and pretty princess, does your chosen boutique have dresses that match your style?
5. Is there parking available?
If you choose a busy city centre boutique leave enough time and take enough change for parking. Also think about when the time comes to pick up your dress, will you be able to get parked nearby? What if it is raining and you need to dash to the car with your wedding dress?
6. Can in-house alterations be done at the boutique?
Does the boutique offer a seamstress service in house or do you have to take your dress elsewhere? What does the seamstress charge, ask to see a price list? Even with a made-to-measure dress it’s likely some alterations will be needed, even if it’s just a bustle to enable you to tuck your train up so you can dance the night away! Where are the alterations done? In the boutique? In front of the main mirror? In the main dressing room? Will the bridal consultant who sold you the dress be involved in your fittings to ensure continuity? Does the boutique add a % onto the seamstress’s costs or do they charge the seamstress to work with them?
7. Does the boutique offer to store your dress for you?
What happens when your dress arrives? Imagine taking it home and your groom stumbling across it! With most brides shopping for their dress well in advance of their big day there can be months of storage needed. Does the boutique offer this service and if so do they charge for it?
8. Does the boutique charge for any extras?
Will you be given a dress bag and a sturdy hanger when you pick up your dress? Does the boutique charge for steaming your dress? It’s wise to check these things so there are no surprise charges for you.
9. Can accessories and bridesmaid’s dresses be bought at the boutique too?
Does the boutique stock a wide range of accessories such as veils, hair accessories, shoes and earrings? They all go together to build up your complete look for your big day and it’s helpful to be able to try various options with your dress and experiment a little.
Think about your girls too, will you be able to get bridesmaid’s dresses and flower girl dresses from your chosen shop. This can make fittings easier for you all, and also a lot of fun!
10. Does the boutique get paid for recommending other suppliers?
Word of mouth is really important in the wedding industry and lots of brides will ask for recommendations. It might be a good idea to ask if suppliers are recommending other suppliers because they think they are really brilliant at their job, or whether it’s because they are getting paid a fee on every booking.

Uncomfortable bridesmaids do not make for happy photographs, so try to accommodate the bride’s wishes within your own comfort zones. The mix and match bridesmaids look might just be the way to go…
DON’T choose a dress that blows the bridesmaid budget
The bride is one of your best friends so of course she wants you to look good. But, if she’s footing the bill for your fancy gowns, it’s polite to stay within her suggested price range.
DO keep your calendar clear for boutique visits
Wedding dress shopping is exciting, but it takes time for most brides to find ‘the one’. Try your best to keep a handful of dates free so that she never has to attend an appointment alone.
DON’T bicker with other bridesmaids
You’re a team, so make sure you act like it! First and foremost, you should support the bride.
DO be a calming influence on the big day
The bride doesn’t want to feel in a rush or be tied up handling calls coordinating suppliers on her wedding morning. Ask for a list of contact numbers and deal with as many queries as you can in her place. Here’s everything you need to know about keeping calm on the big day.
DON’T be late
Nobody but the bride herself is allowed to make the bridal party late for this very important date.
DO take care of the finishing touches
From positioning the bride’s veil to organising the flower girls for their walk down the aisle, the bride will be relying on you.
DON’T upstage the bride
Yes, you look very glamorous and you’d love the photographer to get a shot of you and your other half all dressed up, but remember that it’s not your big day.
DO offer to help the bride
Whether that’s by carrying her lipstick, helping to coordinate the photographs or holding her dress when she nips to the bathroom… Check out these bridesmaids jobs and duties for more ideas.
DON’T get too drunk at the reception
Your formal duties might be finished, but you’re still an important part of your best friend’s big day. She’ll want to dance with you all night long, not be dragging you to the toilet… Make sure you’re on point with these five unspoken rules of being a bridesmaid.

12 Days of Wedding Planning: Will You Have Bridesmaids?!
A blissful blur of pampering, dreamy dresses and Champagne toasts, surrounded by your best girls – is this how you’re imagining your wedding morning?
Your bridesmaids will be there for you as much or as little as you like during the planning, but when the big day comes, they’ll come into their own. You’ll all need time to get ready, but they’ll also be there to hold your hand, make you smile and hang on to your emergency supplies. Which all begs the question – who will you choose to be your bridesmaids?
BEST OF THE BUNCH
Sisters, sisters-in-law and childhood best friends are all frequent contenders for a spot in your bridesmaid party. There are no rules though, so choose the people who mean the most to you. Now is the time to decide if you’d like one of them to be maid of honour, too.
Once you’ve chosen who you’d like your best girls to be, it’s time to ask them! We love the pretty cards you can get to do this with, but you could also get creative and ask with a homemade cupcake, craft or simply over a coffee.
ODD ONE OUT
Worried that choosing an odd number of bridesmaids will look, well, odd in the photographs? It won’t. In the shots of you and your girls, it’ll make up an even number with you anyway. And if you’re really worried about balance, you could also ask your husband-to-be to choose the same number of groomsmen. We’ve seen brides have one, three, ten maids – choose the people who are right for you and the numbers will look after themselves.
GOWNS FOR YOUR GIRLS
The number of bridesmaids you have to dress will likely influence your budget for their dresses. The world is your oyster when it comes to the designs, though. Multi-way, matching, floor-length or short, colourful, even white – we’ve seen all of these and more for your maids! Enjoy the excuse for some girly shopping trips and see what styles you and your girls like best.
If you’ve found your dress, ask your boutique to see the bridesmaid ranges they stock while you’re there. Boutiques will often offer discounts when both bridesmaid and bridal gowns are purchased together, so if you and your girls like what’s on offer, you might be able to secure a special deal.
The key to beautiful bridesmaids is for them to feel comfortable in what they’re wearing, so dress shop together and be open to compromise. You can also help them to express their own personalities by letting them choose their own accessories, hair or makeup. It’s fine to give them some parameters if you do this (gold accessories, no red lipstick etc). More on how to keep your bridesmaids happy here.
Tradition has it that brides give their girls something to say thank you for their help and support on their wedding day. This could be the jewellery they will wear or a thank you present given at the reception – whatever feels right for you. We’ve got some beautiful heartfelt and fun bridesmaids gift ideas that they will LOVE!
Modern maids call for modern traditions – we’re talking about the bridesmaid speech! More and more brides and their best girls are stepping up to say a few words too. After all, why should the boys get all the fun? If your girls are going to make a speech, here’s everything they need to know to nail it – share it with them, they’ll love you for it!

Assembling the dream team
It can be tricky enough rallying the team together to find your dream dress, so how do you start shopping for them? This calls for a dedicated girls night for all things bridesmaid and Maid of Honour!
We love an excuse to get together with our best of the bests or worst of the worsts (however you see those glorious fans of yours!) So, what better way to shop then in your own home with your faves and a couple of bottles of prosecco?
Start with the flip of a laptop
Options online are now so vast; yes, even for bridesmaid dresses. With our favourite brands such as Asos, Topshop, MissGuided and even Whistles now introducing their very own stylish bridesmaid attire, we are spoilt for choice. Maid with Style bring all of these brands along with brands that are new and exclusive to the bridal industry. Plus even ones that may not have been on your radar at all!
The website gives you clear and concise choices with no stress- but big style- and allows the girls to all be involved making suggestions from wherever they may be. Each gown can be ordered directly from the supplier. It’s just a case of booking in your tailor-maid night in with the gang!
Gathering the bridal party
Make this night a hen-initiation night. An evening of friendship, laughter and of course decisions. This is also an opportunity to discuss with your bridesmaids what it is you expect from them and what they can offer you in the build-up to the big day. And if you have ordered your bridal gown already, don’t forget to request a swatch of fabric for your dress to compare to the bridesmaids.
Make your other half scarce for the evening, get the team over, whack Bridesmaids the movie on and get the catwalk (that section between coffee table and TV) rocking!
Making the final selection
The day is of course yours so the theme and feel to the attire is ultimately your vision. However, don’t forget to listen to your bridesmaids too. The photos from the day are going to last a lifetime and you want your bridesmaids to feel fabulous with you. Each person is an individual and combining style, cut and colour is all the trend at the moment so don’t be afraid to mix things up a bit. Trust that you can work together as a team to create that beautiful look you’ve envisaged… but boss gets final say!
