HOW DID YOU BOTH MEET?
We met through mutual friends in Essex when we were 18. We dated for a few years but then separated and had our own families and children. It was only when we bumped into each other at a boxing event in 2010 when we were both single again that we realised the spark was still there after all those years. We’ve been together ever since. Our relationship is strong, respectful and loving.
HOW DID THE PROPOSAL HAPPEN?
Paul proposed in London in June 2013. I’d had a tough year and Paul wanted to give me a surprise evening and whisked me off to The Shard. Once we reached the top, Paul started whispering very sweet words to me and as I turned around to look at him he was on one knee with the most precious look on his face! As he spoke the words, ‘will you marry me?’ I felt like the happiest woman on the planet. There were a few claps from nearby tourists who had witnessed the proposal too which was sweet.
I later learned he had managed to smuggle the ring past the metal detectors with the help of the security guards.
My gown was by Viva Bride and was purchased at The Wedding Dress Factory Outlet in Bromley, Kent. I knew it was the one as soon as I tried it on.
I wore shoes from Dune and a pair of beautiful earrings borrowed from my mother in law Karen. I found my veil at Confetti and Lace, a boutique in Essex.
Paul wore a tailor-made suit by Fox Tailoring in Romford, Essex. It was bought for him as a gift from his brother Mark.
My older bridesmaids were my closest friends with my daughter Mila and Paul’s daughter Brooke as our flower girls. They all wore soft pink, chiffon mid-length dresses from BHS Bridal.
We exchanged vows in a romantic civil ceremony at Gosfield Hall in Essex. It was voted ‘Best Wedding Venue’ in 2011 by Wedding Ideas and is a remarkable place with brilliant staff. My dad walked me down the aisle while an instrumental piano version of ‘Kissing You’ by Des’ree played.
I chose decorations that were neutral, subtle and had class and elegance to complement the gorgeous venue with its stunning chandeliers and period features.
WHAT DID YOU HAVE FOR YOUR WEDDING BREAKFAST?
After enjoying a Champagne reception and canapés, the guests sat down for a three-course banquet. They enjoyed Cajun chicken salad for starters, topside of beef with Yorkshire pudding and horseradish mash for main and chocolate brownies with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
My dad gave a heart warming speech and I will cherish the effort he put in to say such lovely things about myself and Paul. The best man also gave a speech full of jokes. The whole room was full of laughter.
My mother, Angie is very talented and arranged all the flowers for the ceremony and reception.
I decorated the wedding cake myself. I bought plain iced wedding cakes from Waitrose and then assembled and decorated them with flowers and ribbon.
THE WEDDING FAVOURS
I made small sweet jars filled with marshmallows and heart shaped mints as the favours for our guests.
We had our DJ play our favourite songs and lots of party classics during the reception in the evening.
THE FIRST DANCE
Have I Told You Lately’ by Rod Stewart.
We have yet to go, but with five children we’re hoping to enjoy a familymoon soon!
HOLLY’S TOP TIPS
Choose your photographer carefully – you’ll treasure your photos. So much of the day goes by in a happy haze your photos will help create memories afterwards.
The speeches will be an important part of the wedding and gives people you love a role in the big day.
