Barnsley House Spa: Outdoor Hydrotherapy pool

The added contemporary Barnsley House spa is private and petite making use of undulating rural views of the neighbouring cotswolds farms right from the steaming waters of the outdoor hydrotherapy pool to the glass facade relaxation room. Inside the spa, the outdoor elements are carried throughout with exposed cotswolds stone work, wicker and stylishly comfortable rattan furnishings. A select menu of restorative ELEMIS treatments will take you to the lower level of the spa where cosy, dimly-lit treatment rooms await through ochre stone tunnels. A post-treatment chill out zone also on this level is cleverly designed to hub the illusion of nature and is constructed of curvaceous wicker woven walls, oversized individual sofas and plenty of plump mocha fleece blankets.

Barnsley House: The Potager

Dine

Aptly named after the french term for ‘kitchen garden’ Barnsley’s in-house restaurant The Potager brings the tranquility and elegant wilderness of the Rosemary Verey gardens inside – scouting a provencal-style olive palette throughout. Fruitful pots dress the dining room while herbaceous sprigs stylishly accent intimate candlelit tables. Floor-to-ceiling windows right the way around romanticise the view of the gardens at dusk – if you look hard enough you’ll be able to see soft illuminations of the Gothic summer house.

Among the ornamental fruit and vegetable plots, the gardens not only offer innumerable pleasure for mild meandering, they also provide a considerable quantity of the key ingredients that inspire Barnsley’s menu with seasonality at the forefront of every single dish. ‘Crop favourites’ of the season like russet apples and beet varieties are updated inside the menu and whet the appetite for a choice of cleverly cultivated dishes to take your fancy. Not to mention the potted elixir of salty herbed homemade salsa verde’ for anointing to heavenly artisan breads.

Head Chef Francesco Volgo will serve up the most exquisite interpretation of meat and two veg (showcasing their ethos to serve quality by simple cooking of fewer ingredients) including 36-hour pork belly & loin, choucroute, chorizo & heritage carrot. For the seafood lover – lemon sole, nut brown butter & brown shrimp. If it hasn’t been grown in the kitchen garden it will have come from the wealth of surrounding local farms (which Barnsley add you will probably be able to hear from within the grounds!) All washed down with a speciality wine list and all-too-tempting drinks menu featuring Barnsley House’s very own gin which can be spiced up with caramelised and/or floral aromas of ginger and elderflower.

Barnsley House Gardens designed by Rosemary Verey provide calm and relaxation in the Cotswolds – not to mention a prized kitchen garden which inspires fresh seasonal dishes exclusive to The Potager in house restaurant.

While the gardens hum with thriving wildlife at the height of the summer months aswell as milder autumns, The Potager’s floor-to-ceiling orangery-style doors are opened out onto the grounds welcoming warmer climes for alfresco dining morning, noon and evening.
