Forgetting to take the ring off

There are some activities where the safest best is to take your ring off to avoid any damage. Playing sports or going to the gym is always risky as there’s a chance you could chip the stone. It’s the same with gardening – you’re more likely to get dirt in the grooves which can be difficult to clean effectively. Avoid cleaning the house with your ring on, as harsh chemicals can seriously damage the ring and sometimes even blemish coloured gemstones.

Not keeping it in a safe place

If you’ve listened to our advice and you’ll be taking your ring off to do the above activities make sure you have a safe, secure and memorable place to keep your ring. Engagement rings are best kept in their own box to avoid scratching or getting damaged by other pieces of jewellery.

Wearing it in the shower

It’s always best to remove your engagement ring whilst showering or having a bath. It’ll be way easier for your ring to slip off and disappear down the plug hole – and no-one wants that. Soaps and cleansers can cause a build up of gunk on your ring, and will make the rock seem dull.

Swimming with your ring on

Swimming in cold water, e.g the sea or your local swimming pool, causes your fingers to shrink, meaning your ring is likely to slip off and you’re not going to be able to find it in the sea. The chlorine in swimming pools can also damage the ring, especially if it’s regularly exposed to the chemicals.

Never getting it checked

The majority of jewellers recommend that you have your ring setting checked regularly (every 6-8 months) to make sure that the stone hasn’t been knocked loose. Plus it means they sort out any damage or dulling.

Not insuring your ring

Hopefully, if you follow of all our fab tips nothing horrendous should happen to your ring, and although it’s irreplaceable, it’s super important that you insure it just in case. You can usually insure it separately or under your homeowner’s insurance. This will give you peace of mind when you’re out and about wearing the ring – we guarantee it!

Cleaning? Pfft no…

Hire a professional to regularly clean your engagement ring, or clean it yourself! Soaking the ring in a bowl of warm water and small amount of soap for a few minutes will help loosen up any stubborn pieces of dirt. Use a soft toothbrush to clean off any mud and grime and voila!
