Wedding dress shopping isn’t always the easy, breezy experience you want it to be, and as soon as you walk into the boutique, you’re probably going to have a lot of things going around your mind…

I know exactly what I want

So many brides-to-be think they know exactly what they want without even stepping foot in a wedding dress in their lives. Whilst narrowing down the choices is a good idea for letting the shop assistant truly know what you are looking for, going in to a shop open-minded will make the experience run a lot smoother…

So many dresses!

That said, being too open-minded will mean that you are most likely going to be a little bit overwhelmed by it all. Every bridal boutique is wedding dress heaven, with clouds of tulle, silk and lace! But with so many dresses in so many shapes, styles and colours, where do you start?! Having a little inkling at what you definitely want, and what you definitely want to rule OUT will help you massively. Find out what suits your body type here!

What’s the difference between ivory and champagne exactly?

They say that you learn something new every day, and they’re right! Going wedding dress shopping will no doubt add a fair few words to your vocabulary, and you’ll come out knowing things about bridal fashion that you didn’t even know existed before.

Why is she handing me stuff I don’t want?

Never underestimate the power of shop assistants. They can look at you from a professional opinion and be able to tell you exactly what will look good on your figure type, and what won’t. Letting them know about what you’re like, what your hubby-to-be is like, and what your wedding theme is planned to be will give them an idea of what to look for in their shop – a place which they will know inside out. Trust them!

This is fun, let’s not stop

You’ll probably start to get really into it after the first couple of dresses. I mean, you’re getting treated like royalty, right? Sipping on a bit of bubbly, trying on gorgeous dress after gorgeous dress, and showing off to your mum and bridesmaids waiting outside the changing room. It’s a dream day out really…

Does my bum look big in this?

Each shape and style of wedding dress doesn’t necessarily suit each shape and style of the female population, unfortunately. But please ladies, this does not mean you have to opt for the emergency diet for your wedding in five weeks. There is a dress to suit every figure! Let the knowledge of the shop assistant and the opinions of the people you’ve invited along for the shopping trip lead the way!

These dresses are HEAVY

It gets to a point when finding your perfect wedding dress does become a bit of a work out. Most of the time, they are big dresses, plus you get into one, walk around (making sure you and your shopping VIPs see every angle), only to then get unzipped and changed into another one to do the same. Who needs the gym, eh?

I LOVE THIS DRESS… oh

Having said that, the opinions of the people you’ve invited along for this wedding dress day out may clash with your opinions, as well as each others. This is why it’s best to be very selective about who you bring along; the more people there means more opinions, and that means disagreements could be likely. Trying on, what you see as, the perfect dress, only to turn around and see your mum’s scrumpled-up nose, isn’t the best feeling, we know.

Why is she being so difficult?

“Why is she being difficult?” or “Why is she ruining everything?” is something that does go through the bride’s head when they’re getting a little bit fed up of NOT finding the one. But just so you know, that proves that you don’t think you’ve found the one either – even the one you thought ‘might be’, but your mum wasn’t so sure. When you’ve found the one, you just know – these are the signs when you know you’ve found the right dress for you. And as much as it’s your decision, you can’t help but respond to your mum’s, or any of your entourages’, opinions on the dresses you’re trying on!

Can I just find my perfect dress already?!

Just because it’s always as easy as walking into a shop, pointing at the one you want, trying it on and it fitting like a glove, doesn’t mean you should feel disappointed or unenthusiastic about the whole thing. It’s all learning and all a process towards the PERFECT one; the most special dress you’ll ever wear!

THIS IS IT!

Like we said, when you find it, you KNOW it. Expect non-stop smiling (so much that your cheeks start to hurt), a few (happy) tears from you, your mum and your best friends that get to see you in it, and a real struggle to resist sending your groom-to-be a picture. Scale of 1-10 of how excited you are? Probably 12.
