10 Top Tips - Wedding Pictures

  1. Your wedding is a combination of public statement, massive party and the most glamorous event in your lives. Your photographs should reflect these different elements of the day.

  2. The photographer is there to record your day, not to dominate it. So find one whose approach you like. If they are too restrictive, walk away.

  3. On the day, if you are getting married away from your reception venue, why not let the guests leave first after the ceremony? It will give you precious time to yourselves immediately after the service, give you the opportunity for some extra shots and you'll arrive at the venue to a great reception!

  4. No one likes receiving lines! Instead, the bride and groom should 'work the room' on arrival at the reception - great for natural shots of you and your guests and the perfect opportunity for you to say thank you to everyone individually.

  5. Everyone wants to hug the bride and groom immediately after the wedding. So why not take the formal photographs at the reception, when there is more time and everyone is more relaxed?

  6. Take group photos first and then your couple shots while the guests are getting ready for the meal. Most people won't miss you at this point and you won't feel like you're rushing to get back to the party.

  7. In general, the more time you give your photographer, the better the results will be. Work this time into your plan of how the day will run.

  8. Think carefully about putting disposable cameras on every table at the reception. The resulting snaps may not be useable and most guests will have digital cameras anyway.

  9. Ask guests to email you their 'best of' digital pictures, especially fun shots of the evening after the official photographer has gone. It's nice to have a mix.

  10. Find a photographer who will let you put guest photos and honeymoon pictures in your wedding album. He or she can also make sure they blend together with the professional shots, for the perfect personal record of your wedding day.
