Wedding flowers - Create a beautiful bouquet or flower arrangement!

Want high-impact, low-cost wedding flower displays? Sabine Darrall from glily.co.uk shows you how.

  • Centrepieces often take up the largest portion of the wedding flower budget but they are also one of the most important elements in an arrangement. Choose a design that looks good but can also be given away after the wedding like these country flowers in enamel buckets, opposite.
  • Herbs always look pretty and are a very economical alternative to flowers in a bouquet at a wedding. Save a little more by growing them from seeds yourself – you’ll have more choice on varieties and size. Look out for herbs for your bouquet that also have a flower like Marjoram, Mint and Chamomile.

  • Pew ends are very effective but can add up when you’re on a budget. A single hydrangea head attached with pretty ribbon is a great alternative to larger, more costly, wedding flower arrangements.
  • Instead of a large centrepiece arrangement on your tables, create interest and save money by using small groups of flowers in small bud vases and tealight holders.
  • Follow William and Kate’s example and use trees at your wedding ceremony or reception. Silver birch, hornbeam and cherry look great and can, of course, be planted afterwards as a lasting memory of your big day. Find a huge variety at ashridgetrees.co.uk.
  • If you’re planning a spring wedding, raid the garden for your flower arrangements! Daffodils and Narccissi look great in posies, pew ends, bouquets and table arrangements. If you’re really good at planning, you may be able to buy these bulbs and seeds and grow them in time for the big day!
  • Look for designs that can be reused throughout the venue and moved from location to location – an archway of flowers looks great outside a church but cannot be transferred to the reception afterwards.
  • If you’re having a lot of bridesmaids, costs start to mount up if they all have a bouquet. As a chic alternative, give them a simple bouquet of one hydrangea with a collar of leaves finished with pretty ribbon. It's an extremely economical arrangement and will still look amazing in your pictures.
  • Arrange pretty lanterns and candles on church window sills and transfer them to mantelpieces for a romantic evening look. A few well-positioned lights can fill the space of flowers or draw attention to your key display arrangements.
  • Enlist the help of your friends and family and arrange some of the wedding flowers yourself. Keep it simple and remember to wear gloves! Gliy has a range of flower arrangement workshops running throughout the year for all abilities.
