Be enthusiastic
It may not be your big day as the maid of honour, but try to be enthusiastic when discussing colours, theme ideas and so on. ‘Do whatever you want’ is not helpful when the bride has a million and one ideas running through her head!
Be her right-hand woman
In the final few moments before a bride walks down the aisle she needs to be completely calm. She doesn’t need to know that the cake topper has gone missing or that the best man’s zip has just broken. Shield her from stresses at all costs!
Be assertive
So, the bride has chosen a style of wedding dress you hate. It doesn’t flatter your figure and you feel like the odd one out. Suggest that you have different styles in the same colour. Or, suggest some alteration ideas – begin with ‘I would feel more happy and confident if…’
Make time
Plan your diary around the bride and be available for important appointments. Hopefully she would do the same for you.
Organise the hen night
Don’t let the bride organise the hen night and definitely don’t allow her to chase payments for hotels. This is the maid of honour’s job!
Be a bridesmaid ALL day
You are the maid of honour from the moment you wake up on the big day of the wedding, to the moment you go to bed. You should be the one getting signatures for the guest book, making sure the suppliers have been paid and that granny has caught her taxi home – not the bride.
Remind the groom
Grooms often forget the little romantic touches, so gently remind him that a love note on the morning of the wedding would be a sweet idea.
Offer to pay
Whether it’s your dress, your shoes or your accessories, offer to pay for part of your bridesmaid outfit. It’ll mean you’re more likely to get the things you want and the bride will love you for it!
Ward off jitters
Banish all talk of ‘have I got the right dress?’ ‘is the venue good enough?’ – Reassurance is key within the last few weeks.
Stock the fridge!
Make sure there’s a bottle of Champagne waiting in the fridge when the newlyweds return from honeymoon.
