Bridesmaids - the guide

Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:25

Be kind to your bridesmaids, and they’ll be kind to you in return. They are an essential part of your wedding day, and there a number of ways in which you can make their day special, too. Here’s a few other ways in which the bridesmaids can get involved:

  1. Helping the chief bridesmaid to organise the hen party

  2. Attending all wedding-related parties, rehearsals and shopping trips. It’s a hard life…

  3. Keeping in touch with the bride re arrangements and details

  4. The bridesmaids could buy their dress and shoes

  5. Organising and attending bridesmaid dress fittings

  6. Taking an interest in all the details, and helping with the organisation where possible

  7. Helping the bride get dressed and ready for the wedding

  8. Keeping a stash of useful things for the bride throughout the day, including lipstick, translucent powder, clear nail varnish, plasters, headache pills, key phone numbers, mobile phone, directions/address of first night venue, spare pair of tights or stockings, perfume, or tissues

  9. Arriving early for the ceremony

  10. Taking charge of the bride’s bouquet at the altar

  11. Posing for photographs

  12. Helping the bride into the car when she leaves for the reception

  13. Looking after the bride. Making sure her dress is looking good, rearranging the veil and that making sure that she always has a drink

  14. Chatting to all of the guests; making sure that everyone is having fun

  15. Forming part of the receiving line

  16. Taking their place at the top table

  17. Looking after each other, especially if there are little ones

  18. Helping clear up after the reception.

Remember...

  • DO find an outfit that they love
  • DO find a matching or complementary colour scheme for all of the attendants
  • DO let the bridesmaids have a say in what they wear
  • DO pick dresses that flatter individual figures. They don’t all need to be the same style, just co-ordinated colours and fabrics
  • DO remember to buy your bridesmaids gifts to say thank you
  • DON’T Try to make a fashion statement with your bridesmaid dresses – you’ll cringe at the photos in years to come
  • DON’T have too many bridesmaids. Stick to friends you know will be around forever
  • DON’T let your wedding be the first time that your bridesmaids have met each other. It’s much better if they are already a strong team
  • DON’T think you have to have little bridesmaids if you don’t want to
  • DON’T feel obliged to have any particular bridesmaids. It’s your day and your choice.
