The chance for a leap year proposal only happens once every four years. It's tradition on this day for the woman in the relationship to pop the question to her boyfriend. We've got some fab tips to help you propose to your hubby-to-be.

  • the-leap-year-proposal-the-dos-and-donts-for-popping-the-questionDo sound him out first, perhaps make a joke about popping the question and see his response so you know if he is likely to say yes.
  • Do suggest you revisit the restaurant where you had your first meal to re-kindle the feeling of new love but don’t get drunk; you might not remember if he said yes!
  • Do dress to impress to put him in the mood for romance.
  • Do flatter him and pander to his ego.
  • Do take the phone off the hook, try to make sure you're not disturbed - if somebody rings the doorbell it could spoil the moment!
  • Do make sure you have his full attention - proposing while he is watching a key match on TV probably isn't the best idea.
  • Do let him know your feelings before you pop the question.
  • Don’t be with friends – just the two of you is best.
  • Don’t propose with a ring – just ask the question – get the response, you can buy a ring later.
  • Don’t propose in the height of passion; you may not get a truthful reply.
  • Don’t propose if you have known him less than six months as you are still looking through rose tinted glasses.
  • Don’t tell friends you are going to ask him beforehand. Don't go away for the weekend to propose, too much pressure on you.
  • Don't propose while you're on holiday - if he says no, you may not be able to get a flight back home.
