Stunning St Lucia - A Caribbean gem of a honeymoon destination
With magical scenery and fabulous food, this gem of an island in the Caribbean makes the perfect romantic honeymoon destination.
Where is it?
The beautiful island of St Lucia is situated in the Caribbean and measures just 27 miles long and 14 miles wide. The island is said to resemble a mango in shape and it can be driven across in around an hour and a half. The gorgeous, palm fringed beaches found on the western side of the island are complemented by the warm, turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. To the East, the Atlantic Ocean offers an equally beautiful but more rugged shoreline.
What is there to do?
Even though St Lucia is relatively small, it is packed with all kinds of amazing things to see and do. The first things that strikes as you leave the airport is the abundance of natural beauty, and of course the wonderful heat with a refreshing breeze.
A visit to Soufriere is a must, it’s a town on the west coast and is like stepping back in time to visit an old French colony. The incredible backdrop to the town are the Pitons. These are two huge volcanic cones that rise majestically out from the waters, covered in lush green vegetation. They are the iconic image of St Lucia and can be found promoting everything from beer to tea-towels. The nearby Diamond Botanical gardens are home to thousands of colourful orchids, tree ferns, coconut trees and cocoa plants, not to mention a truly breath-taking waterfall. What makes the cascading waters so special is that they are rich in minerals and have a reddish glow to them. It’s a sight to behold for any occasion, but absolutely perfect for a honeymoon destination.
If you fancy something a little more energetic, how about racing through the tree tops on a zip-slide? Once attached to a harness, wearing a safety helmet and gloves, you’ll be zooming through the rainforest, Tarzan style! There are 11 exhilarating slides providing amazing panoramic views. What a thrill! See adventuretoursstlucia.com to find out more.
Rodney Bay is a popular town with malls, markets, hotels and restaurants. It’s also the place to be for some of the island’s liveliest bars and nightclubs along a road known as The Strip. The nearby village Gros Islet has a huge street party every Friday night called The Jump Up where DJs play outdoors and the place has a festival atmosphere playing reggae, calypso and dancehall music.
If water sports are more your thing there is everything from windsurfing and sailing to diving and snorkelling around the Caribbean island’s stunning coral reefs. Romantic horserides through the clear Caribbean sea are also on offer, not to mention some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Or you could just take a romantic stroll on the beaches, hand in hand!
Where to stay?
We stayed at Cap Maison, which is a family run boutique hotel perched on the edge of a cliff located in the north west point of the island close to Rodney Bay. The staff were all so charming and eager to make our stay in St Lucia as memorable as the island is beautiful. The main restaurant at Cap is called The Cliff at Cap and the mouth watering contemporary French – Caribbean cuisine is served up with spectacular cliff top views. The hotel also has a luxurious 42ft boat that can be chartered – we took a trip down to Soufriere. And if you’d like a relaxing spa treatment, you’re in luck – see the range of treats on offer at capmaison.com
What about the rooms?
There are 50 guest rooms, villas and suites at the hotel, all beautifully designed in a Caribbean style. I stayed in a villa suite that spanned three floors with a fully equipped kitchen, four-poster bed and a private rooftop jacuzzi overlooking the sea. Honeymoon destination heaven!
Can you get married there?
Yes, and it’s the perfect destination for a wedding or honeymoon destination. The staff at Cap Maison can take care of all the wedding details, providing first-class food and accommodation in the most exceptional surroundings.
