An elegant and romantic real wedding in a beautiful purple colour with lots of diamanté sparkle… and a fiery finale!
WHO: Kerry and Jon
WHERE: St Michael’s Church, Sutton Bonington, and Sutton Bonington Hall, Leicestershire
WHEN: July 2010
PHOTOGRAPHER: Ian Bursill
A little over two years after their first blind date, Jon proposed to Kerry on a gondola beneath the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. “He had written me a beautiful poem, with his proposal in the last line, but it didn’t sink in until he’d got down on one knee in the boat and produced the most beautiful diamond ring,” she says.
The bride’s real wedding outfit
Petite bride Kerry found her choice of dresses limited by her dainty figure. “I take a UK size 4-6, and the sample real wedding dresses in most of the stores I went to swamped me,” she explains. After meeting Sassi Holford in person at The Designer Wedding Show, Kerry decided on one of her gowns: a timeless style with a bodice overlaid with French lace, a long train and tulle skirt. “It had quality stamped all over it! I loved how it felt,” says Kerry. “It cost an awful lot – £3,000 – but I figured it was the only chance I’d ever get to wear such an amazing dress!”

The groom’s outfit
Jon’s traditional black tailcoat with grey pinstripe trousers came from Italian master tailors Pal Zileri, with a deep purple cravat from Dessy to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. “He looked so dashing and handsome, I couldn’t wait to say ‘I do’,” says Kerry of Jon’s real wedding getup.
Kerry’s three best friends turned heads in Dessy dresses in a rich purple colour, with each bridesmaid wearing a slightly different style to suit her figure. “Their dresses all had an air of 1930s Hollywood glamour,” she says.
Kerry chose a palette of pinks for her real wedding flowers, and turned to Flowers By Sarah to bring her ideas to life. “I wanted masses of big-headed pink peonies and roses for maximum impact, with hardly any greenery, and Sarah really ‘got’ my vision,” explains Kerry. The reception flowers were adorned with diamantés and placed on large mirrors surrounded by tealights
The couple’s friends, professional singers Delroy Atkinson and Shelley Williams, sang a soul duet while the newlyweds signed the register: “It was a mind-blowing performance,” remembers the bride
“As we left our reception, our guests escorted us out under a tunnel of sparklers – it was amazing!”
The majestic Sutton Bonington Hall was an elegant reception venue. “Our real wedding theme was romance, so we had lots of little romantic touches, from the personalised labels on the bottles of Champagne to the ‘family tree’ of framed photographs of our relatives’ wedding days,” says Kerry
“We wanted personalised favours, so we recorded the soundtrack to our real wedding on CD,” says Kerry
